What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil for dogs? What is it?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis.  Cannabis is also known as marijuana. While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant.  The hemp plant is a cousin of the marijuana plant.  It is worth noting that most CBD oils do not contain THC.  THC is the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties.

Uses of CBD Oil for Dogs

Now that you know what it is, let’s find out how it can be used for dogs.

There are several medicinal properties in CBD oil.  According to Dr. Klein, the AKC’s Chief Veterinary Officer, CBD has several uses for dogs.  It can be used for its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and for possible anti-cancer benefits. To date, there is no conclusive data on its anti-cancer benefits.

While there is no conclusive study on the use of CBD oil and dogs, owners have reported that it appears to help with the items above such as treating pain and controlling seizures in their animals.

What Are the Side Effects of CBD Oil for Dogs?

Because formal studies have not yet been completed, there is no definitive answer.  However, CBD oil is presumed to have the same type of side effects in dogs as it does in humans.  These include dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, and drowsiness.

What is a Normal Dose of CBD Oil for Dogs?

The risks and safety factors of CBD oil for dogs are yet to be fully researched.  As such, the FDA has not published a dosing chart.  This means that it is unclear what dose would be toxic.  As with any new medication, please first seek the advice of your veterinarian.  If you vet approves the use of CBD for your dog, he may also suggest starting with a very small dose.  Then, closely monitor the effects.

CBD Oil Products

If your veterinarian and you decide to start CBD oil for your pup, there are things to look for when purchasing the oil. For instance, you’ll want to be sure that it is high-quality CBD oil to ensure that it will have the desired affects.  You’ll also want to consider the following:

  • Look for organic so that it has less chance of containing pesticides, fungicides, or solvents.
  • You know the saying ‘You get what you pay for’. Do not purchase the cheapest option as it will most likely have the ingredients noted above.  The higher quality CBD oil generally comes with a higher price.
  • Know what you’re purchasing.  Each manufacturer of CBD oil should provide the amount of CBD in the product and whether it includes THC.  It is best to purchase a brand without THC.
  • Purchase in liquid form. This allows you to easily adjust your dog’s dosages drop by drop.
